The push toward net zero is no longer a distant goal—it’s fast becoming a business essential. If your organisation forms part of the supply chain for a large company, you’ll soon be required to take meaningful steps to reduce and report your emissions. From 1 January 2026, large companies will begin reporting their scope 3 emissions, which cover all indirect emissions created across their supply chains. This includes the emissions generated by small and medium businesses that supply goods and services.

What does this mean for you? If your business is in their supply chain, you’ll need to understand and document your own emissions profile and demonstrate that you’re preparing a clear and credible transition plan toward net zero. Companies will increasingly favour suppliers who can show they are actively reducing emissions, making it critical to get ahead of these requirements.

But transitioning to net zero isn’t just about compliance, it’s also an opportunity for growth. Businesses that take early action often find they gain a competitive advantage. This may include standing out in tenders where sustainability is a key scoring factor, lowering operating costs through improved energy efficiency, accessing grants and incentives available for decarbonisation projects, and strengthening their brand reputation with environmentally conscious customers. In many cases, these benefits can far outweigh the initial effort required to begin the transition.

To support Western Australian small businesses on this journey, Business Foundations has developed the ‘Getting to Net Zero – A Practical Guide for WA Small Businesses’. This free guide outlines a practical, step-by-step approach to net zero.  We explain the different types of emissions, outlines practical methods for measuring and reporting them, and provides simple tools and frameworks to help you develop an achievable transition plan. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine existing efforts, the guide is designed to give you the confidence to take action.
