Getting to Net Zero: A Practical Guide for Small Businesses
Many small businesses will be legally required to begin reporting their greenhouse gas emissions from 1 January 2026 if they are part of the supply chain of big companies. They will also need to produce their plan to transition to net zero.
Business Foundations can provide a practical, step-by-step approach to decarbonisation. We have all the information you need about emissions reporting approaches, and the tools that will help your business act with confidence.
Why You Need to Decarbonise
The climate is changing, and so are the expectations placed on small businesses. All of Australia’s largest companies and government agencies are already reporting their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, but from 1 January 2026, they will also need to report their Scope 3 emissions.
Scope 3 emissions are those that are emitted by the businesses in their supply chain. This means the majority of Western Australia’s small business community will have customers knocking at their door asking for their numbers.
For WA businesses, taking steps toward decarbonisation is no longer just about doing the right thing. It is about saying competitive, meeting contractual requirements, saving money on energy, and unlocking grant opportunities.
How We Have Helped
SECCA
Business Foundations conducted a feasibility study to assess the readiness of commercial and industrial customers to participate in a virtual power plant across the South-East Corridor Councils Alliance (SECCA). Through profiling local businesses, delivering practical guidance, and engaging councils directly, the project focused on lifting energy literacy, removing barriers to decarbonisation, and highlighting practical, place-based solutions that align with Western Australia's net-zero pathway.
Three Streams
Each business within the Three Streams ecosystem plays a crucial role in addressing specific gaps in waste management and energy generation, with their products designed to be Reused, Recycled then Composted. Business Foundations worked with Three Streams to raise the required capital to scale through advisory services and the development of an Investment Pitch Pack. As Three Streams continued to grow, we also supported them to establish a Board of Directors for the business to provide effective strategic oversight, enhance operational governance, and support sustainable business growth.
City of Canning
Business Foundations has been engaged to lead the Canning Decarbonisation Project alongside two other organisations, to understand the barriers and enables for change in the practices of individual businesses within the Local Government Area. Our work will help the City understand how they can help commercial supply chains to work together to achieve a net-zero outcome.
