About the Course
Cyber security is a growing issue for small business owners, with one in five SMEs in Australia having experienced a cyber-attack. A cyber-attack can result in financial losses, business disruption, loss of important data and reputational fallout.
The Optus and Medibank hacking scandals have once again brought the issue of cyber security to the media. Yet many small business owners still think it will never happen to them and take no steps to prevent cyber-attacks. It is this sort of thinking that makes small businesses one of the easiest targets for hackers, with 47% of cyber-attacks directed towards SMEs.
In partnership with Safe n Secure Cyber and the City of Cockburn we have developed a series of practical cyber security workshops to help business owners understand the risks and start to implement new tools and strategies to secure their business.
WORKSHOP ONE: SECURE COMMUNICATIONS AND MESSAGING
Email is a convenient and longstanding form of business communication. However, it lacks the airtight security that can protect your business against sophisticated cyber-attacks. Depending on the type of work your business does, your use of email could prove to be a significant liability in the future.
The training session will demonstrate:
- Secure messaging applications such as Signal and Telegram as a means of secure communication with business partners;
- Use of Mailvelope, a PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) based application that runs in your web browser to provide military-grade encryption protection for email;
- Using Veracrypt to create secure containers for transportation of documents;
- Standards and processes to follow to ensure maximum results and minimise compromise.
Upon completing this workshop, you will be equipped with the knowledge of how to defend your business communications from cyber-attacks.
This is a hands-on workshop, you will need to bring along your laptop and a fresh USB stick (1GB more than enough) so you can start to implement the strategies covered in the workshop.
This workshop is proudly sponsored by the City of Cockburn.
