He has worked with owners of small to medium sized businesses to improve their digital protections and knowledge of cyber security.

About the Course

Cyber security is a growing issue for small business owners, with one in five SMEs in Australia having experienced a cyber-attack. A cyber-attack can result in financial losses, business disruption, loss of important data and reputational fallout.

The Optus and Medibank hacking scandals have once again brought the issue of cyber security to the media. Yet many small business owners still think it will never happen to them and take no steps to prevent cyber-attacks. It is this sort of thinking that makes small businesses one of the easiest targets for hackers, with 47% of cyber-attacks directed towards SMEs.

In partnership with Safe n Secure Cyber and the City of Cockburn we have developed a series of practical cyber security workshops to help business owners understand the risks and start to implement new tools and strategies to secure their business.

WORKSHOP TWO: PROTECTING DEVICES AT REST

Even files that are not being edited or shared need to be protected. Simply protecting documents with a password is insufficient security for sensitive or commercial documents.

There are a number of features on your existing operating system that you can easily implement to help protect your confidential data. Combining these with containerised digital file storage will significantly upgrade your protection. This approach can further protect files stored in the cloud from attacks.

This training session will demonstrate:

  • Protecting your data at rest by enabling encryption features within your existing operating systems that are free to use;
  • Using Veracrypt to create secure containers for storage of sensitive documents that can be accessed across Linux, Windows and Macintosh operating systems;
  • Mounting these containers as drives;
  • Standards and processes to follow to ensure maximum result and minimise data compromise.

This is a hands-on workshop, you will need to bring along your laptop and a fresh USB stick (1GB more than enough) so you can start to implement the strategies covered in the workshop.

This workshop is proudly sponsored by the City of Cockburn.
