As a passionate advocate for mental health and well-being, launching White Space Mental Health was a no-brainer for business owner Penny Jakovcevich.
With a background in counselling and as a volunteer crisis supporter with Lifeline, Penny had a passion for empowering others with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of mental health. It is through this that she discovered the transformative power of education for breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, which is invaluable for organisational culture.
Penny took part in the Self-Employment Assistance program at the beginning of her small business journey.
What motivated you to start your own business?
As I moved into the Mental Health Sector I was attracted to the wider opportunities that contract work and self employment would present to me.
How did you find out about Self-Employment Assistance?
I found out about this program from a number of other participants who had gone through it on their own journey into small businesses. They had good things to say about it, though I wasn’t eligible for the payment side of things I was definitely attracted to the mentorship part of the program.
What part of the Self-Employment Assistance program did you find most valuable?
I have enjoyed the mentorship part of the program. This helps to keep me on track and accountable, as well as being able to offer me a different perspective of someone with experience in small business.
What services and/or products do you provide?
Mental Health Training for organisations.
What challenges have you had to face since starting your business? How have you overcome these challenges?
I feel that the main challenge I now face in my small business is longevity and to future proof my contracts, to continue to network in this area in ways that feel productive as well as genuine.
What have been some of the highlights of operating your own business?
Flexibility and freedom.
What is the one piece of advice you can give to others thinking about starting their own business?
That even if you do feel at times overwhelmed and intimidated – go for it! Build it up slowly on the side so that you feel comfortable with the risk you are taking on. I am so proud of what I have been able to achieve.
